Cryptojacking might sound like an exciting term in the crypto space but trust me it’s something you will always want to prevent from happening to you. Cyber crimes are continuously evolving and becoming more complex and creative in a variety of fields. Crypto space is no different. It is, therefore, not a wonder that users have reported and are concerned whenever their cryptos are hijacked or compromised. This act is referred to as crypto-jacking, and in most cases, the user is usually unaware. So, what exactly does this act involve, and how can you detect, prevent and recover from it?

What is Crypto Jacking?

This is the act of hijacking a computer system and having it mine crypto coins without the knowledge or will of the user. The unauthorized criminal utilizes the user’s computer, tablet, smartphone, or any other device or server, and uses the resources within to mine the cryptocurrency. He can introduce cryptojacking software in the device or server which will in turn aid in mining the crypto. Additionally, the hackers conduct it in a way that keeps the victim totally in the dark, unaware of what is happening in their crypto.

Remember, the goal of such criminals is to get the profits of crypto mining without undergoing the hassle or being responsible for paying the hardware used, the fees charged, or the electricity bill. As a user, you need to protect yourself against this type of threat especially since most cryptocurrency buying and selling sites are virtual. However, how about detecting them first?

How Do You Detect Crypto Jacking?

As a user who has incurred the huge costs of mining crypto, you wouldn’t want a second party to reap the profits. Unfortunately, detecting cryptojacking can be a hassle. This is because you will typically not experience the actions taking place in your system. The following are some of the things you can look out for to detect cryptojacking;

  • Your Device Performing Slower Than Usual

If you have been using the same computing device or server to mine cryptocurrency for a while, no doubt you know its performance level. If you notice that it is slagging and continually performing slower than normal, or crashing, you should be concerned. Chances are that a cryptojacker may have already installed hacking software on your device.

  • Overheating of Your Computing Device

If you notice that your computing system overheats more than normal, it could be a sign that a hacker is mining your crypto.

  • Poor Battery Performance

As a user, you probably know the battery performance of your computer or device. Therefore, if there are changes and it begins performing poorly, it could be a symptom that a hacker is trying to reap the profits of your crypto mining.

  • Increased CPU Usage

When you notice that your central processing unit (CPU) has surprisingly high usage, consider it a red flag. A cryptojacking activity may be underway.

How To Prevent Crypto Jacking

Having known how you can detect cryptojacking, and that the attack methods have continually evolved and changed, you need a defense strategy. So, how do you prevent them from occurring? The following are some beneficial basic tips;

  1. Stay Informed on the new Cryptojacking Trends

Cryptojacking aims at leaving no traces behind. The hackers are developing new and improved ways of stealing from you and evading it. Therefore, to protect your crypto, you can stay aware of the latest tactics employed by hackers. When you are aware of the prevailing attack methods, you can be sure to avoid certain websites, and know when to apply some protective measures.

Additionally, if you ever fall victim, use the experience as a lesson and protect your system from future compromises.

  1. Tighten Cloud Configurations

At times, you may fall victim to crypto-jacking because of cloud misconfigurations. So, make a point of checking if your cloud services are exposed to threats e,g connected to a public internet with no appropriate authentication. Moreover, if there are any credentials or secrets in the applications, it would be best to get rid of them.

  1. Use a Good and Up-to-date Cybersecurity Program and Systems

This may involve having a strong endpoint program and updating your software and device to you minimize the chances of having the hackers execute their attack. At times, the cryptojacker may take advantage of a vulnerability in existing software. So, once you install up-to-date software from a trusted source, you protect your crypto.

  1. Avoid Clicking on Unfamiliar Links or Opening Malicious Applications

A hacker may trick you into clicking a link on your computer. It could be through email. Once you click on it, crypto mining software may be installed on your device. So, if you are suspecting an application or link, it is best not to proceed. In case you making online crypto payments, it’s advisable to always use trusted sites.

  1. Use a Strong Password

This is one of the most effective ways of denying unauthorized outsiders from accessing your device. Notably, you can play around with numbers, alphabets, and characters by mixing them up. Using random and unique words that are not easily predictable or easily figured out can be of great help.

Can You Recover Crypto Jacking?

What if you already suspect you have been a cryptojacking victim? The first thing you should do is close all browser windows then exit the browser. Additionally, if there are any browser extensions, ensure you eliminate them. Once you are done, you can run an anti-virus scan in a bid to recover from the attack.

This, therefore, means you should always have anti-virus software installed on your device so you can detect and destroy the crypto-jacking malware. Alternatively, you can install a firewall to recover from a web-based cryptojacking. It will block any malicious traffic before it gets to your computer system. Also, if the attack has already happened, a firewall can help you recover.

Stay Vigilant

Cybercriminals are devising more creative and competent techniques to mine and stela users’ crypto. What’s more, they aim at conducting their activity without the user’s knowledge. Therefore, if you want to stay cyber safe, we recommend you always stay vigilant and active, knowing the most current tactics employed, blocking ads on your computing system, and avoiding browser extensions among other ways. You have a duty in ensuring the security of your crypto against vulnerabilities of cryptojacking.
